JoAnn Depolo
Artist-Author 2007

Most people are amazed at the style and diverse nature of the pieces created by Artist JoAnn DePolo. Not only has she developed these works in a short time span, but there is almost nothing that she does not see as a pallet or medium that will bring forth a creation. JoAnn’s creativity extends into writing as she authored a book published in 2006 titled "Making It As An Artist".

Artist DePolo began drawing in 1993. This was her first attempt with the creative aspect of visual arts, as her artistic experience to this point was in photography. Looking back through the years at her professional career as a photographer, JoAnn remembers having a feeling of being boxed in, as if her spirit was being held back. That boxed in-ness was her only indication of the enormous eruption of creativity that she discovered with her introduction to painting with acrylics, and the freedom of expression that this medium offered. It would take only two years before her paintings gained recognition in the art world.

In 1995, Artist DePolo began painting
“Cleveland Rocks”, which are portraits of recording artists and Cleveland scenery, on ordinary rocks. Her “Rock” collection received interest and exhibited at the same gallery that was also hosting an art exhibit for world-renowned Artist Peter Max. The two met at the reception, where Artist DePolo presented Artist Max with his very own “Cleveland Rock” portrait. It was amazing to see how much the world-renowned Artist enjoyed and respected DePolo’s work stating...

“This is a wonderfully unique idea. I’ve painted on many things but never thought to paint on rocks. I love it!”
Peter Max

Since that meeting, JoAnn’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries around the Cleveland area and other celebrities also own pieces of her work. The Cleveland Plain Dealer published a review of Artist DePolo’s first gallery exhibit of canvas paintings in 1998 where they described her as a “visionary artist”. Since that time, she has completed numerous murals in the Cleveland area for both the public and private sectors and her work is included in private collections in the U.S.A. and abroad, in the countries of Germany, Ireland and Japan.

Although painting on canvas is her preference, Artist DePolo is foremost a creator. As author of
"Making It As An Artist", her passion to help individuals succeed is evident as she shares some of her personal experiences as an artist and offers practical guidance to encourage and support both established and aspiring artists.

She believes that art is more than just paint on a canvas. She continues that art begins in and erupts out of the heart of the artist, who as a means of communicating expresses what is obvious in new and unique ways. It is an unleashed freedom.

JoAnn resides with her family in Olmsted Falls, Ohio where she continues to create contemporary art, instruct
Come & Create™ Art Sessions, provide professional coaching to artists, conduct Making It…Seminars and direct Come & Create™ Community Murals. Her work continues to receive the attention of the media through television, magazine and newspaper recognition.
